Chapter Six

When I came downstairs the next morning, Thorn was gone. He’d folded the blankets he’d gotten out of the linen closet and washed his hot cocoa cup. On top of the stack of blankets was a sticky note with a heart drawn on it.

I crumpled it up at first, but then I smoothed it out and tucked it into my purse as Meri came running out of the kitchen. “Breakfast?”

I laughed. “Of course, I’ll get you breakfast,” I said. “Don’t try to pretend like Thorn didn’t give you bacon before he left.”

“He didn’t,” Meri said. “He just left this time. But it’s okay because you’re going to feed me now.”

“I am,” I said. “And we’ll stop at Viv’s for coffee and bacon too.”

“Does that mean I can have salmon for breakfast?” Meri seemed hopeful and in a decent mood.

“If that’s what you want.”

“Yes, please.”

Salmon sounded good to me too, so I fried myself a fillet in butter and olive oil and seasoned it with some honey mesquite seasoning. I wasn’t exactly sure what would go good on the side with that, so I made myself a couple of over-medium eggs too. It was the high-protein breakfast special, and I was so full after I ate it that I made myself a mental note to start having a high-protein breakfast every day. Not that I needed to watch what I ate, but it did give me a mood boost to know I was doing something healthy for myself.

“You’re going to come with me to the shop today, right?” I asked Meri as I was putting on a swipe of eyeshadow.

“That’s the only way I’ll get bacon,” he said.

“Yeah, if you don’t come along, then I’ll get bacon from Viv and eat it all.”

“I don’t have anything on the agenda today, so I’ll come to work with you,” he said.

“You have an agenda?”

“Maybe I do and maybe I don’t.”

“You’re a weirdo,” I said.

“Whatever,” Meri shot back.
